A House Without Honor

We’ve officially run out of hope there was anyone in the White House with some semblance of honor. None we can trust in discussing the smallest of matters, let alone the big ones. The nation knew what it was getting in Donald Trump, serial cheater with an extensive background of sexual assault and financial bad faith. Liar extraordinaire.

Let Them Eat Cake

There was some hope that those around him would do better, perhaps appeal to his better self should it exist. We were told he’d assembled an excellent National Security team. Men of honor who would put country first ahead of politics. Flynn, Tillerson, Pompeo, and Mattis. Gen. Mike Flynn lasted 24 days before resigning after reports of undisclosed meetings with Russians and being an undeclared foreign agent for Turkey. Tillerson has presided over the gutting of the State Department and the world sees him as castrated, unable to speak for the President without being overridden by a tweet. Pompeo recently proclaimed the Intelligence Agencies concluded Russia had no impact on the Presidential election when they said no such thing. Mattis initially fought the good fight but soon crumbled. becoming just another sycophant. Pence sold his soul long ago and Sessions is on a one=man tear to bring back mass incarceration and further legalize voter suppression. Carson is a joke!

The Appearance Of Impropriety

According to Wikipedia, the “Appearance of Impropriety is a phrase referring to a situation which to a layperson without knowledge of the specific circumstances might seem to raise ethics questions.” In other words, the average person on the outside would look at something and say it looks bad. Most companies try to avoid any appearance of impropriety for selfish reasons. They don’t want to alienate their customers, they want to appease shareholders or investors. It’s bad for business. Governments avoid impropriety because they want the public trust. This has typically meant that government officials that look guilty of something, have to go because integrity requires it.

The Trump Administration including Trump himself has made it a point to disregard how they appear to anyone except perhaps Trump’s ever narrowing base. He destroyed norms by not releasing his Tax Returns which every President since Nixon has done. Since the election he doesn’t even pretend they’ll ever come out. Kellyanne Conway said, “it’s been litigated extensively during the campaign and we won!”

Trump has surrounded himself with those who wear their White Nationalism like a badge of honor. Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, Michael Anton, Sebastian Gorka and Jeff Sessions. Some like Sessions deny until the cock crows but his past comments and current actions demonstrate his alliances. He doesn’t care how it looks for these are his people.

The Trump family had ignored all previous protocols regarding conflict of interest. Trump divested himself of little, letting his son’s manage his vast enterprise while promising not to discuss with their father what he can read in the news. Ivanka deals with China and Saudi Arabia on the same day as meeting with the respective leaders. The countries Trump gets along with despite their totalitarian regimes seem to coincide with where Trump does business.

When it came to the selection of his Cabinet. He sought not the experienced, knowledgeable and qualified. Instead Trump chose his cronies, the corrupt, and the hangers on. A man of few personal core values, his Cabinet collectively reflect his lack of empathy for any but the rich in their quest to reap more. His healthcare plan is about providing none to more and at a lower cost to those remaining. His tax plan is to reward the already rich by taking from the poor. His policies certainly look like he cared only for his family, friends and others in the upper brackets. He’s unconcerned about the whispers, even the howls of those who protest.

And now there’s national security. Many around him have had secret communications and meetings with Russian officials that they lied about. That enough would call for a reaction from any other President. Trump calls it “fake news.” Russians laundered money working from Trump Tower. Trump claims he didn’t know his tenant although pictured cavorting with him at the Miss Universe Pageant in Russia. He lies in every moment, unconcerned about any later “fact check” which he’ll simply dismiss. When the investigations began he tried to obstruct justice. He fired the man leading the FBI charge, blaming it first on others before confessing it was his own plan. He begged the heads of the Intelligence agencies to clear him and quash any investigation.

It's a family affair

Photo: twitter.com

All this cannot happen in a vacuum. It takes a co-conspirator or in this case a host of co-conspirators willing to look the way while he literally sells out the American people to financial interests foreign and domestic. It takes a Ryan and McConnell to provide cover and look the other way. A Tillerson, DeVos, Mnuchen,  and  Carson to pretend to perform traditional roles in Government while in fact doing little or nothing they’re responsible for. It takes a Sessions to appease the core of his constituents.

Donald Trump cares nothing for the appearance of impropriety. He seems to believe the swirl of controversy to be part of his charm. The point he misses is that not giving a damn about what people think doesn’t mean the people aren’t entitled to give a damn. Impropriety reeks throughout this administration. Flynn set records for lasting the shortest time as NSA Director (24 days). The Trump administration set records for the earliest a Special Counsel was appointed to investigate them (4 months). There’s one more record he can set… Impeachment or Resignation. Clock is ticking.

It’s a Family Affair (Blood’s Thicker Than The Mud)

We may all find out soon if like the Sly Stone song, “Blood’s thicker than the mud?” The investigation into the ties between Russian intelligence and the Trump campaign has now focused on Jared Kushner, son-in-law and White House Advisor to Donald Trump. In this case, Kushner isn’t actual blood but a relation by marriage as Kushner is married to Trump’s favorite daughter Ivanka, also a White House employee.

a jared 4

Photo: thedailybeast.com

We know that Kushner attended an undisclosed meeting alongside embattled former advisor Mike Flynn with the Russian Ambassador. Kushner also met with the head of a Russian state-owned bank, also undisclosed. Kushner is alleged to have urged the firing of James Comey. Perhaps his interest in seeing Comey gone had as much to do with his own legal peril as with Donald Trump? Weeks ago Steve Bannon told confidants that Jared’s contacts with Russians and his expected testimony before Congress on the subject will become, “a major distraction for the White House.”

a jared 5

Photo: twitter.com

Sooner or later, Jared will have to decide whether his primary duty is to protect himself and his wife and children or to protect the interests of Donald Trump? If he chooses to save himself will his wife stand by his side or will she be shown to love Daddy best? The least likely scenario is that Donald will sacrifice himself to protect those he allegedly loves. Melania already refuses to hold his hand in public. If he loses Jared or Ivanka, Jared and Ivanka… who else does he have? Don Jr and Eric don’t seem much like foul weather friends or in this case relatives. Tiffany seems banned to the family outer limits already.

I’ve seen Donald twice in real life, surrounded by an entourage but looking lonely and isolated none the same. It’s rumored he roams the White House at night, unable to sleep, now apparently unable to tweet as perhaps his outside lawyers have made themselves clear. During his almost completed foreign trip, Trump was able to limit exposure to the press with scripted appearances. On the flight home, Trump will realize it’s about to get real.

Remembering back to the campaign. Kushner apparently had a long-standing grudge with Chris Christie who while US Attorney, prosecuted his father and sent him to jail. I wonder what he’s thinking as investigations threaten to bring down his father-in-law? And of course himself. Perhaps he longs for a return to a quieter life, he can go back to being a slum lord and suing tenants for their last dime inconspicuously. Instead he’s a subject of scrutiny of the FBI. Stay tuned!

What Did Mike Pence Know and When Did He Know It?

Mike Pence has had his name come up a few times during the ongoing Russia investigations. Fortunately, his boss could be counted on to provide a distraction a day so that Pence has never come under any concentrated focus. Since the election, people have more or less forgotten that he was almost as big a liar as Trump. The Vice-Presidential Debate was a clinic on how to tell any lie in the moment, even though it can and will be fact checked within hours.

Within hours of the first version released about how James Comey was fired as the Director of the FBI. Pence went to Capitol Hill and gave statement after statement about how Trump reached the decision after receiving a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Now that those statements have been rendered false when Donald Trump revealed in an interview his intention all along to fire Comey and that the memo came at his request. It would be easy to say that Pence himself was misled and he was just repeating what Trump told him. To do that however, you’d have to forget that Pence was in the room along with Attorney General Jeff Sessions while Trump implemented his plan.

a mike p

Photo: spokesman.com

That meeting was troubling in and of itself because it included Sessions who had allegedly recused himself from all matters involving the Russian connections to the Trump campaign. Trump has acknowledged it was Russia on his mind when deciding to fire Comey. In a related matter, the Justice Department is currently not responding to questions about whether Sessions is involved in the investigation of Paul Manafort who was the Trump Campaign chair. Back to Pence.

There appears to be a coordinated effort to keep Pence above the fray, despite his constant wallowing in the dirt. Everybody keeps repeating the hard to reconcile version that Mike Flynn lied to Pence which was the reason he got fired. Pence was the Chairman of the Trump Transition Team. He was responsible for the vetting of Cabinet nominees and Presidential appointments like Flynn. It was to Pence that Elijah Cummings wrote on November 18, 2016 questioning him about published reports of Flynn’s troubling involvement with Turkey. It was Pence that apparently didn’t get the required new clearance for Flynn to become National Security Advisor. It is Pence who hopes to still be standing as collusion and corruption takes down all around him.

If there was only Russian interference into the Presidential Election without participation of the Trump Campaign. Trump could still be removed based on Obstruction of Justice or simply diminished mental capacity as he seems to be unraveling before our eyes. In that case, rules of succession would lead us to Pence. If the Campaign was complicit; I submit the result cannot stand and the only remedy is a new election.

This Republican Congress has time after time put their Party above the needs of the Country and looked away from all of Trump’s misdeeds. It might even be their preference to end up with a President Pence which would enhance the chances of implementing their agenda. Given the opportunity, this Congress would prefer a transition to Pence no matter what Trump may ultimately be guilty of. They will continue the troubling pattern of holding Pence up as the untainted one when in truth he’s covered with slime. It is important for us to not let Pence slide while those around him are drowning in quicksand. It all starts with the question. What did Pence know and when did he know it.

Traitors, Spies and Lies, Lies, Lies!

Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates testified today in an open hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee. She said out loud what we already knew. On behalf of the Justice Department she warned the Trump transition team three times that Mike Flynn was compromised and could be blackmailed by Russia. He had been meeting with a known Russian spy, the Russian Ambassador to the United States. He had taken money from  Russian State-sponsored TV station. Media reports show him receiving half-a-million dollars from Turkey (with recent reports suggesting that money may have come from Russia as well).

Sally Yates

Yates told White House Counsel Don McGahn, that Flynn had been obviously lying to Vice-President Mike Flynn about his contacts with Russia. This was based on multiple statements by Pence to the public quoting Flynn which the Justice Department knew not to be true. McGahn called back the next day asking why the Justice Department cared about one White House official lying to another? He also asked if Flynn was the subject of a criminal investigation. Her answer to the first question was; they cared because Flynn could be subject to Russian blackmail because they knew he was lying. She refused to answer whether there was an active criminal investigation against Flynn which was an answer in and of itself.

a-sally-yatesss

The White House to this point has denied specific knowledge of Flynn’s trouble and suggested Yates only hinted at potential problems. Yates testified under oath that she walked McGahn through Flynn’s “underlying conduct” which was “problematic.” There can be no doubt that on January 26th and 27th the White House knew that they had a serious problem with General Mike Flynn. For reasons yet to be discovered, the White House did nothing until the Washington Post released reports of Flynn’s lies and Donald Trump fired him three weeks after the public discovered what they’d long known.

We also learned today that in their meeting on November 11, 2016. President Barack Obama warned Donald Trump specifically about Mike Flynn. On November 18th, Rep. Elijah Cummings sent a letter to Vice-President Elect Mike Pence, head of the Trump transition, asking for information about Flynn’s lobbying work and conflicts of interest. Pence’s lies about knowing nothing won’t likely withstand the bright lights to come.

On some future occasion I’ll go into the Russian ties of Jeff Sessions, Carter Page, Jared Kushner, Rex Tillerson, Paul Manafort and Donald Trump himself according separately to his two eldest sons. Members of the Trump administration and family have met with Russian spies like Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and banker Sergey Gorkov. Those suspected as being traitors depend on ones definition of the word. Those that certainly put their own financial interests ahead of their country (which meets my definition) include Mike Flynn, Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort. The lies about Russia have come from Mike Flynn, Jeff Sessions, Paul Manafort, very likely Mike Pence whose claim he knew nothing has never made sense and Trump himself.

When Sean Spicer takes the podium tomorrow at the daily White House Briefing. He will have to choose whether to speak honestly to the media and American people. Or continue the cover-up of Russian infiltration into this administration.

One thing to watch for. Observe the great lengths Republicans go to keep Mike Pence pure and untainted as the investigations roll on. Republican establishment powers might even be happy to see the erratic Trump go down if it meant replacing him with a more competent President on their same wavelength. A corrupt President can be replaced. What they can’t abide is a finding of collusion with a foreign power that might void the election itself. Stay tuned!

Donald Trump: “You Surround Yourself With People Who Demand So Little Of You”

Millie Jackson is an R&B songstress perhaps best known for her monologues and raunchy lyrics. Her height of popularity was during a long run from the 1970’s thru 1990’s where she did quite well with the possible exception of her Country album. She did on occasion come out with a sweet love ballad, one of which was “Sweet Music Man” which she performed as a duet with Kenny Rogers who originally wrote and performed the song. One of the lyrics was, “You surround yourself, with people who demand, so little of you!” I am reminded of that line often when thinking of Donald Trump.

millie5

Donald has always operated in a vacuum where he only needed to work with a few people, all of which under his direct control. Despite his need for adulation he doesn’t really like people and would rather be adored in the media or cheered from a stage than actually holding conversations and shaking hands. The self-professed germaphobe doesn’t like people much at all despite his overwhelming need to be liked.

When Trump had to form a government, he basically had to outsource it to a few new friends around him with some government experience. He appointed Chris Christie to head up his transition team who he had to dump when Bridgegate problems became a drag. He then appointed Pence to head the transition who had staffed a Governor’s and Congressional office but perhaps was over his head given the apparent lack of vetting of Cabinet officials and Mike Flynn who headed up (briefly) the NSA.

Besides Pence, suggestions whirled around Trump coming from Bannon, Flynn, Sessions, Priebus, Gingrich, Giuliani, and others who had, “said nice things” about Trump which he associated with credibility. He found himself increasingly surrounded with people more loyal to those that got them their jobs than Trump himself. He tried to overcompensate by refusing to let Tillerson, McMasters and others appoint their own staffs. Surrounding them with spies who would report back to Donald. He gave offices and more power to Jared and Ivanka, hoping “blood’s thicker than the mud.”

millie1

And then there’s Russia. There’s no doubt Russia worked to influence the Presidential Election in favor of Trump. The number of relationships the Trump Campaign and Administration have with Russian oligarch’s, politicians and spies defies any possibility of coincidence. The only question that remains is how much did they collude with Russia and who was involved? Manafort is gone but many of the staff he brought on remain. Bannon has been coordinating most everything in Trump world, how could he not be involved? Flynn had visible conflicts given his paid roles for Russia and Turkey. Some while involved with the Trump campaign. Jared has had questionable contacts. All of these were either not disclosed or lied about. Trump himself has acted as the Putin’s Special Ambassador, praising him at every turn, condemning him for nothing.

Now that the investigations have begun. The one word that must have Trump shivering in his gold-plated boots is being uttered… immunity. He must know these people have no personal loyalty to him, just as he would have none for them in a situation where one of them had to go. Flynn has offered testimony to the FBI and the Intelligence Committee’s if given immunity. Immunity is typically offered when you have evidence against someone higher up that they want more than you. On the Trump organizational chart there is only one man above Flynn. Trump himself.

How does it end? A man like Trump will not fall from grace willingly or easily. He’ll tweet up a storm, encouraging his most ardent followers to revolt. He’ll accuse every party involved of malfeasance, conspiracy, and treason. He has publicly stated the President “cannot have a conflict of interest.” It’s a small step to presume he’s also above the law. He’ll look to those he would wish would help, Congressional Republicans, White House Staff, the people he appointed. He’ll only see those planning their own escape from the Hell Thump hath wrought. They won’t mind selling him out for some immunity of their own.

millie4

Back to the Millie Jackson lyric. Donald Trump has surrounded himself with people who demand very little of him. They never required him to grow up. They allowed him to continue his irresponsible tweets. They Trumpsplained his every thought and action, treating them as brilliant negotiation strategies instead of the rash, childlike responses of a bully. Because they allowed him to throw his tantrums without reprimand. He in turn demanded little of them. We have a President who is knowledgeable about no policy and has the attention span of a flea. No one will throw themselves on their sword to protect him. Even Ben Carson will declare, “No mas” and give up. He offers nothing of value worth protecting. From now on it’s every man/woman for themselves. And it couldn’t happen to a more deserving person.

Last Man Standing?

As the Trump Administration begins its freefall. Republicans are working towards how to rise from the ashes and position themselves in the best possible way for the future. The “Russian Connection” that without a doubt reaches all the way to the President and has tentacles throughout his staff is becoming more clear. The attacks will come daily from the media, from Democrats and ultimately the Republicans in Congress who can finally equate National Security with doing their job.

There has never been any love in Congress for Trump, the brash outsider who has at one time or another belittled them all. They’ve kept silent or offered grudging support as he offered up an unqualified batch of billionaires to fill his Cabinet. The Trump support had little to do with love or respect for the man. They fear the Trump supporters who would turn on them at the first sign of dissent. Ferreting out the Russian links to the Administration will be the means to the end whereby they can get rid of Trump while offending the smallest portion of his base.

images

Mike Flynn is gone as head of the NSA. Not because he lied to Mike Pence or the President but because it was about to go public the Justice Department revealed to the White House that Flynn was susceptible to Russian blackmail. The important detail there is that Trump and others knew for a month and did nothing. Why?

It is impossible to conclude Trump didn’t know about Flynn’s phone calls in real time. It’s most likely that he was directing the content, undermining the current President and the sanctions he placed on Russia which Flynn said Trump would undo. It is impossible to believe that nobody bothered to get to the bottom of how the language got changed in the Republican Platform at their convention in favor of Russia. Now suddenly, they name Paul Manafort the ousted former Campaign Chairman as the culprit.

Investigations are already underway. The FBI, CIA and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. It is the last which may do much of the damage because it will be more public. The same Committee where Republicans a month ago tried to refuse to investigate the Trump/Russia ties will now see Republicans take the lead as they try to recover the self-esteem Trump had previously crushed.

At the White House, self-preservation will be in full effect. This is a new Administration with no real loyalty to each other and questionable loyalty towards Trump. Most are there because their role increased their personal income or influence. It’s hard to be a true believer when the man you work for has few if any core beliefs. Who will be willing to throw themselves on their sword to save Trump? Probably nobody. The question, who would tell everything they know to save themselves would likely generate a line. When faced with prosecution or perjury charges, the truth will be told. Except from Trump who is incapable of telling it.

The elephant in the room is that if and when it’s revealed that the Trump campaign and Russia conspired to help him win the election and that Trump knew. What do we do then? While the Impeachment/resignation of Trump would be clear. How could any of his appointments go unquestioned? Bannon, Sessions, Conway… all those who were there early and often will be suspect. Everybody brought on by Flynn. Tillerson with his Russian ties. There will be a feeling that if the election was truly influenced by Russia that the result cannot stand. As opposed to simply handing over the reins to the next in line, Mike Pence.

a-penccc

Great lengths are being taken to pass along the narrative that Mike Pence was lied to. He wasn’t part of the plan and was the leading force behind ousting Mike Flynn. When Pence went out on national TV supporting Flynn, he was only repeating the lies told to him so that’s okay. It’s not like Pence has ever lied to us before. During the campaign he would blatantly lie about things Trump had said saying, “He never said that!” He lied about Trump saying more countries should get nukes. He lied and said that Trump “never attacked anybody.” He lied about the Carrier Corporation jobs staying in Indiana scam where he as Governor of Indiana  granted them millions in tax offsets while Carrier  merely shifted jobs from another location. Why would we believe anything Pence says about anything?

pence

We will be given a theory that Pence will be the solution as opposed to being a continuation of the problem. The narrative is already building. The Republican Congress has always preferred Pence because he’s someone they feel they could more easily do business with. There are many including the LGBT community that have long feared a Pence Administration more than Trump. Let’s hope their fears aren’t realized.

The Shadiest Administration Ever

In less than three weeks the Trump Administration has proven itself to be the shadiest of all time. Shadier than Nixon’s, Clinton’s, Andrew Johnson’s… Trump beats them all.

nixon-1

What Trump has that the others didn’t is a Congress and a Party base eager to look the other way until some unknown line is crossed when they can ignore it no more. Starting with Trump; he of the unreleased taxes, failure to divest himself of his businesses and clearly making decisions in the best interests of the family fortune. He is more interested in his brand than the nation. His wife was selling her jewelry on Inauguration Day. He is hosting foreign dignitaries at his hotel a few blocks from the White House. He just doubled membership fees from $100,000 to $200,000 at Mar-a-lago which he calls the winter White House. He is blatantly selling access to himself. Those who care aren’t in power. Those in power don’t care!

He has his sons running the family business yet attending meetings with foreign leaders with access provided by Daddy. His son-in-law has been made a top advisor. His daughter Ivanka allegedly stepped away from her business yet has sat in meetings with foreign leaders whose state owned banks she’s negotiating financing from. A White House spokesperson speaking in front of the Presidential Seal made an appeal to support Ivanka’s business. Donald Trump tweeted his contempt for Nordstrom’s that dropped Ivanka’s clothing line due to declining sales.

nixonn

Photo: thedailybeast.com

His Cabinet is being approved by a Republican Senate that has ignored situations where the Secretary is totally unqualified (DeVos and Carson), has a history of putting their profits ahead of the nation’s interest (Tillerson and Mnuchin), insider trading (Price) or racist (Sessions). Whatever their transgressions, the Senate just looked away and cast their “aye” vote.

For all the sins of those that had to be approved by the Senate. Trump’s political appointees are even worse. Bannon the White Supremacist. Kellyanne Conway, she of “Alternate Facts,” Sean Spicer the designated liar. Mike Flynn who we learn was discussing sanctions with the Russians even before taking office. There are those who say that wasn’t necessarily a problem. There is a problem with the fact that he lied about it, Pence lied about it, Spicer lied about it and of course Trump. Reince Priebus when RNC Chairman led the RNC effort to suppress black and minority votes.

Photo: twitter.com

There is not a single one that hasn’t stood in front of the cameras and lied to the public. They don’t even tell good lies, most are easily disproved. There’s a theory that they have so many lies being told at the same time that no individual lie gets any real attention.

Then there’s Russia. We know the former campaign manager Manafort had to resign because of the millions in cash he’d received from Ukraine. Flynn and Tillerson have close Russian ties. One of Trump’s sons bragged about the level of business the company did with Russia. Donald now denies it but we never did see those taxes did we?

We saw the video of Trump talking about his ability to “grab them by the pussy” when discussing women. The rumors about a tape with Trump paying Russian prostitutes to urinate on a bed may or may not ever be proven true. Still, we know that there are unreleased video’s of Trump debasing and/or assaulting women on the set of Celebrity Apprentice. Lawsuits are moving forward from some of the women who came forward to accuse Trump of sexual assault. His own words validate their claims. An ex-wife (who is not the only woman) accused Trump of rape.

Trump would be happy to know his Administration is record setting. Were it not for a Sessions in charge of law enforcement and a partisan Congress unwilling to investigate there would be more investigations underway than already are. Flynn and others are under FBI investigation for their relationship to Russia. Manafort is being investigated related to Russia. Kellyanne Conway is in theory being investigated for her comments urging people to buy Ivanka Trump’s products. Other investigations related to Russian hacking and influencing our recent election may yet snag some of the administration, possibly Trump himself. The smoke is billowing. Soon will come the fire. The shadiest Administration ever.

Trump’s Day In Review (2/9/2017)

  1. Gets abused by a Federal Court panel that upheld the stay on his Muslim ban in a unanimous decision. The judges took particular umbrage with the claim that his Executive Order in the area of immigration was “unreviewable” by the Courts.
  2. Washington Post reports Gen. Mike Flynn discussed sanctions with Russia before taking office. He denied this twice but before the cock crowed had a spokesperson walk that back saying he “couldn’t be positive the subject didn’t come up.” FBI investigation continuing.
  3. Watched his spokespeople try to defend his tweets about Nordstrom’s dropping Ivanka’s clothing line while denying his obvious conflict of interest.
  4. Attended the swearing in of Bull Connor as Attorney General.
  5. Dined with Sheldon Adelson and Rex Tillerson at the White House, they denied later laughing about how many billions they had between them.
