The Time Joe Biden Didn’t Listen To Anita Hill And We Ended Up With Clarence Thomas

She was asked to appear, when she did she spoke about his unwanted advances, his predilection for pornography and his love of the character, “Long Dong Silver.” He enjoyed scenes of women with animals, and rape scenes. He bragged about his own sexual prowess. He inquired to a group of workers, “Who put a pubic hair on my Coke can?”

On December 14, 2017, Joe Biden said, “I wish I had been able to do more for Anita Hill, I owe her an apology.” He was referring to the 1991 Senate Confirmation Hearings for Clarence Thomas who’d been nominated by George H.W. Bush for the Supreme Court.

Anita Hill had appeared as a witness in the nationally televised hearing, saying she’d been sexually harassed by Thomas when he was her supervisor at the Department of Education. In 1991, the President was a Republican but Democrats controlled the Senate. Joe Biden of Delaware was the Chairman of the Committee.

Biden had never directly apologized to Hill before. He’d indicated he was sorry about the composition of the all-male panel that sat in judgment of her testimony. He claims he later supported campaigns of two women who ran for the Senate, in hopes we wouldn’t see that spectacle again. He’d said, “My one regret is that I wasn’t able to tone down the attacks on her by some of my Republican friends.” He also said, “As much as I tried to intervene, I did not have the power to gavel them out of order.” It took 26 years for Joe to acknowledge he owed an apology to Anita Hill, and I’m afraid it fell short.

The women that came forward recently to accuse Roy Moore of sexual harassment and in one case pedophilia, were right in thinking they would not have been believed 40 years ago. Not only was Anita Hill not believed by those who judged her testimony, it set a tone that women would not be believed, better to suffer silently and move on. There was a “high-tech lynching” during that hearing, not the one Clarence Thomas famously claimed but of Anita Hill, and Joe Biden allowed it.

Thomas testified first, and in what may have been the first usage of a Republican using the race card, set the tone that any attacks on him were because he was black. During the alternating questioning by Republicans and Democrats, the Republicans praised Thomas and when her turn came they buried Hill. Democrats were too passive to challenge Thomas credibility lest they be seen as attacking the poor black man. They stood idly by including Chairman Biden while they attacked Anita’s character and motives. She was, “a woman scorned.” She’d followed him from the Education Department to the EEOC, rather like the actresses who worked on more than one Harvey Weinstein film. She was allegedly upset because another woman had been promoted in her stead at the EEOC.

It may have been lost that Anita Hill didn’t volunteer to testify. NPR’s Nina Totenberg leaked a Judiciary Committee/FBI report which included Hill’s charges. There were witnesses who could have backed up Anita Hill’s claims. Angela Wright told Senate Judiciary Committee staff that Thomas, “often asked her for dates and asked about the size of my breasts.” He often discussed the anatomy of other women. He later claimed dissatisfaction with her work and fired her. Rose Jourdain backed up Wright’s comments and told of how Wright came to her office in tears after a discussion with Thomas. Sukari Hardnett said, “if you were young, black, female, reasonably attractive, and worked directly for Clarence Thomas, you knew full well you were being inspected and auditioned as a female.”

None of these women testified before Congress. Biden says it was their choice and he had all three sign statements saying they chose not to testify. There is some dispute as to whether Biden coerced them not to testify or simply didn’t call them wanting to end the hearing. There is no dispute that each watched what Anita Hill had been subjected to while Biden did nothing.

Earlier when Thomas testified, he said, “This is not an opportunity to talk about difficult matters privately or in a closed environment. This is a circus. It’s a national disgrace. And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate rather than hung from a tree.” I submit it was Hill that was the victim there.

Joe Biden has gone on to do several things in support of women’s causes. He drafted the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and began the, “It’s on Us.” Campaign while Vice-President to target sexual assaults on college campuses. In 1991, Joe was making a national name for himself in Politics and even then, aspired to one day be President. His name was already in those types of conversations. At best he didn’t believe Anita Hill as he allowed her to be thrown to the wolves during the Senate hearing. At worst, he believed her, and it didn’t matter, then making a political judgment as to his best interests while sacrificing not only Anita Hill but generations of women who saw the public example of what happens when you speak out. Joe’s apology to Anita Hill is not only long overdue, it’s woefully insufficient.

In response to one of Joe’s earlier half-hearted general apologies. Anita Hill said, “I still don’t think it takes ownership of his role in what happened. And he also doesn’t understand that it wasn’t just that I felt it was not fair. It was that women were looking to the Senate Judiciary Committee and his leadership to really open the way to have these kinds of hearings. They should have been using best practices to show leadership on this issue on behalf of women’s equality. And they did just the opposite.”

Jones Wins! And No Alabama, We Don’t Forgive You, Or The Republican Party Either

So, Alabama, you walked to the edge of the precipice, and this time didn’t jump off. The state that has given us Bull Connor, George Wallace, and Jeff Sessions, and embraced Steve Bannon and Donald Trump. Was concerned enough about its reputation to not vote for Roy Moore; racist, homophobe… pedophile. The race was close, Moore led most of the time but the urban counties that included Montgomery, Huntsville, ad Mobile, pulled it out for Jones.

So before you start celebrating that Alabama did the right thing. Remember, this was a race that shouldn’t have been close. You flirted with sending the worst candidate since Trump to the United States Senate, knowing who he is and not caring. Yes, a few more of you voted for Doug Jones, but enough of you voted for Moore that you don’t get a pass.

Let’s not forget the Republican Party either. The Republican National Committee was shocked to hear about Moore’s past trying to pick up teenage girls at the mall, or in one case at the courthouse. In alleged disgust, they withdrew funding from the race while still supplying feet on the ground to help Moore until they got caught doing that. As the election drew near and they realized that Alabamians weren’t repulsed enough to make winning impossible. You quietly slipped Moore $1 million in additional funding which no individual admits deciding to do. Ronna Romney McDaniel, the RNC Chair said, “the entire Alabama delegations from the House and Senate” asked us to restore funding. Just afterward, Sen. Richard Shelby indicated he didn’t vote for Moore and made no such request.

Back to you Alabama; former Auburn University and NBA star Charles Barkley said, “At some point, we’ve got to stop looking like idiots to the nation.” Alabama has yet to reach that point. When I was in college, I went to Montgomery to play in a basketball tournament. When it was concluded, I didn’t return to Nashville with my team as it was now spring break but instead took a bus to Atlanta where I then lived. Before leaving, I had a meal in a Picadilly Restaurant where they served buffet style meals. I was surprised when I saw an Alabama State Trooper wheel in the ex-Governor George Wallace. This was a few years after the assassination attempt that left him paralyzed during his run for President in 1972. Say what you will about George, before the shooting he was energetic, robust, and projected strength. The man I now saw was lethargic and defeated, a shell of his former self. In the abstract, I considered Wallace someone to show contempt for if not outright hate. The man before me only generated pity.

The news coverage of the election revealed how extensive voter suppression is in the state. It was a court case in Shelby County that led to the gutting of the enforcement provisions of the Voting Rights Act. Alabama immediately enacted a Voter ID law that did several other things including making it harder to get licenses in the counties with the highest black populations in the state. Alabama is still very much what we thought it was. They are not to be celebrated for refusing to send a man to the Senate that they wouldn’t let near their daughters, that was banned from the mall. They came awfully close to doing just that because their politics were far more important than their morals. I’ve found that same sense of pity I once felt for George Wallace. #Sad!

Roy Moore, Al Franken, and Donald Trump. How Do We Sort Out The Differences?

As of the time of writing, nine women have come out with accusations about the sexual conduct of candidate for Senate Roy Moore including that of being a pedophile, the worst of those being one of molesting a 14-year-old. Thirteen people have levied accusations against President Donald Trump, the worst being a 13-year-old claiming rape. (There’s no other kind of sex between a grown ass man and a 13-year-old). Now, a claim has been made against Senator Al Franken, saying he groped and assaulted a woman which comes with a picture of him appearing to fondle her breasts while she slept.

All of these men claim to have a great respect for women. A lot of people (mostly men but not all) have been able to simultaneously claim their respect for women while attacking those that came forward. It’s clear that partisanship trumps respect every time and that we are able to ignore what these men have done if their views align with our politics.

Roy Moore and Donald Trump have adopted the strategy of denying every claim while shouting, “Fake News!” to the top of their lungs. There are known to be several videotapes of Trump on the set of, “The Apprentice” where he is alleged to have demeaned women and minorities, that people including Mark Burnett the Producer are keeping that information from being made public. By his own admission, he feels empowered to “kiss women” without consent and “grab ’em by the pussy.” Large subsets of people including a majority of “white women” and “white males without a college education” were able to look the other way and support Trump despite his known comments and alleged actions.

Roy Moore was banned from the Gadsden Mall when in his early thirties for cruising the mall trying to pick up young girls. He signed the yearbook of a 16-year-old girl he claimed not to know, in a restaurant he claims to have never been in. In a recent press conference, Roy Moore indicates his desire to “get back to the real issues” affecting Alabama, as if he were not one.

The woman who came forward to recount her experience with Al Franken is named Leeann Tweeden, a radio personality in Los Angeles. Prior to that, she hosted fitness shows on ESPN including “Fitness Beach” where she gained the fame which likely got her invited on the USO tour where she met Franken. This isn’t going to turn into a, she traded her sexuality for fame and has to expect men to take certain liberties excuse. This is a, it doesn’t matter what a woman looks like, none deserve to be treated in a manner where their bodies and rights are subject to violation. For those who see it as “just a prank,” imagine it was your daughter. How funny would it be then?

Make no mistake these men and these incidents are not the same. Franken’s behavior doesn’t begin to reach that of the other two. Yet if we accept his behavior, how do we retain the moral authority to condemn the other two?

As to what should happen to the three. I don’t want Roy Moore to be seated in the US Senate, even if he does win the Special Senate Election slated for December 12, 2017. I believed that even before the recent claims of him being a pedophile because he was also a racist and a homophobe.

I want Trump gone too, again though, the reasons are many. Racist, homophobe, potentially treason. That and risking nuclear war to prove what a big man he is, despite the small hands. He’s inarticulate, unintelligent and according to one tally, lies 5.5 times a day.

The question remains, what to do about Franken, whose transgression occurred 11 years ago. I must remember I gave Roy Moore no credit for 40-year-old crimes. The alleged rape committed by Donald Trump was 23 years ago. He doesn’t get a pass either. To his credit, Sen. Franken did not condemn his accuser, he issued an apology, which he added to later on Facebook. So when the sexual harasser is a friendly face, who I’ve admired as a Senator and shares my political views. What to do? In perhaps the first time I’ve ever wanted to paraphrase Donald Trump, “I like Senators who weren’t sexual harassers.”

In our response, as both Democrats and Republicans, we will indicate what we are willing to accept if it advances our political agenda. Is a Democrat looking the other way on Franken much different than Republicans ignoring Moore… Trump. Are we going to simply point fingers and say “what about” Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, and the entirety of the Congress who wrote rules that protect themselves when they are defendants and require the accusers to sign confidentiality agreements to seek redress? It is the culture that must be changed and looking the other way just won’t do. So as much as I have liked Al Franken in his service in the Senate. I think he must go.

Roy Moore Signed The Girl’s Yearbook And Was Banned By The Gadsden Mall

Roy Moore, the 70-year-old Senate candidate from Alabama is convinced his supporters are stupid. He has vehemently denied the accusations of the initial four women that accused him of sexual harassment and assault, one of the girls was 14 at the time which even in Alabama was a crime. Moore was 32. The last time I dated a 17-year old, I was 19 and we were both in college.

Then a fifth accuser came forward, speaking publicly and volunteering to testify under oath before a Senate Committee should one have balls enough to have a hearing. She says she met him at the restaurant where she worked and that he was a regular customer. He says he’s never been to the restaurant and doesn’t know where it is. She describes various times she encountered him including when he offered her a ride home and tried to force her head into his crotch and finally literally threw her out of the parked car. He says they never met. She says he told her…

He alleges it’s all a liberal Democrat plot. She voted for Trump. Somebody is lying. If only there were some way to determine who was telling the truth. Oh, wait! He signed her high school yearbook! He indicated he knew her, indicated the restaurant they were at he’d swore he’d never patronized, reminded her he was the District Attorney.

If that weren’t enough, dozens of people including in law enforcement indicate Roy Moore was banned from the Gadsden Mall for cruising teenage girls. Plainly spoken Roy Moore is a pedophile, stunted in his emotional development to where he could only communicate with those half his age, with little experience. It’s only a matter of time before more women tell their stories, #MeToo.

If you are one of those who still stand by Roy Moore in spite of all that you now know. If you are one of his surrogates who continue to condemn the women that have come forward, calling them liars and impugning their motives. If you are one of those who said, “Even if true” or “It was over 40 years ago” or suggested in any way that it really doesn’t matter. If your ideology would have you prefer a Republican pedophile whose already demonstrated his lack of respect for the law and court system, his bigotry, and homophobia than any Democrat. If you are so obtuse that simply proclaiming, “Fake News” is enough to erase any number of real and demonstrable acts. Fuck you very much!

“Even If True…” The Republican Defense of Roy Moore

Since the Washington Post printed a story about Senate Candidate Roy Moore (AL) having sexually molested a 14-year-old girl. The Republican Party, particularly its elected officials have gone crazy, figuring out how to respond. Establishment figures John McCain and Mitt Romney, both former Presidential candidates, insisted Moore should withdraw from the Senate race and allow another Republican to take his place. Most Republican officials have said something similar to, “If true… Roy Moore should drop out of the race.” His defenders have gone hard in the paint attacking the four women who detailed their relationships with Moore when they were in their teens and him in his thirties. They said, “it was too long ago.” One compared the age of the youngest accuser to that of the age they suggested the Virgin Mary was when Jesus was conceived. The worst said, “Even if true… what difference does it make?”

They questioned why the women didn’t come forward earlier? The same questions they asked of Cosby accusers, Weinstein, Trump (we will come back to Trump) and others. They called the women liars, accused them of political motivations, they questioned their character and promised repercussions. They suggest the proof has disappeared and now they have no case. In reality, had an accusation been made a week or even a day after the events in question. There would never have been more proof than the word of the women. Teenage girls vs. a District Attorney.

Recent polls suggest Moore’s lead has dropped from  6 points to a tie in deeply Republican Alabama. Most people believe that unless other accusers come forward and reach a critical mass. Roy Moore is still likely to win the upcoming special election on December 12, 2017, to fill the seat of Jeff Sessions who departed to become Attorney General. We need not even ask if Republicans are willing to vote for someone accused of sexual assault (Trump), heard on tape bragging about such behavior (Trump) and even accused of the rape of a 13-year-old girl (Trump again). It is apparently more important to win an election than being concerned if you’re seating a pedophile.

Alabama knows Moore’s history as a bigot and homophobe so is being a sexual predator really much more of a stretch? If you were voting for him already, knowing who and what he is. Why not now?

During the Presidential campaign, after the infamous video was released where Donald Trump bragged about kissing women against their will and that he could, “grab ’em in the pussy.” Congressman Devin Nunes was mortified as he denounced Trump, saying, “How could I face my young daughters?” He apparently found the words as after a couple weeks he became a full-throated Trump defender again. There is almost five weeks before the Special Election in Alabama. We’ll see what it is what they stand for? But for those who said, “Even if true…” their values have already been made clear.
