The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was founded by the American Conservative Union (ACU) which is the oldest conservative lobbying organization in the country. CPAC is a four-day conference which includes an Activism Boot Camp and claims to “unite the political leaders of the conservative movement with the people who make up the movement.” Every year and especially election leaders, Republican elected officials and candidates flock to CPAC in order to curry favor from the conservative (Right) wing of the Party. In 2017, CPAC is being held February 22-25 in Maryland just outside Washington, DC. This years speakers include President Donald Trump, Mike Pence, Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus, Sheriff David Clarke, and Sean Hannity. Their message will hide in couched language one of division, white exceptionalism and derision and dismissal of others. One speaker who was scheduled to appear and was just disinvited was Milo Yiannopoulos.
Milo who has now achieved single name status is a British journalist and Senior Editor for Breitbart News, has become famous for his intolerance of others. He was permanently banned from Twitter in July, 2016 for “inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others.” He personally attacked and exhorted others to troll African-American actress Leslie Jones for her role in “Ghostbusters.” Among other things he said she was “barely literate” and called her a “black dude.”
In January, 2016 he co-founded the Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant, planning to disperse 50 grants the first year, 100 in the second of $2,500 to “disadvantaged white male students for their tertiary expenses.” The program had a fitful start including the resignation of the co-founder amid claims of non-payment, applications are now being accepted.
Milo who is openly gay has spoken out against feminism, Islam, social justice, political correctness. He says, “Gay rights are detrimental to humanity” and that gay men should “get back in the closet.” In late 2015 he started the “Dangerous Faggot Tour” at colleges and universities across the US and Great Britain. Several stops in Great Britain were canceled. Most in the US were still held while protested heavily. At Rutgers, several women stood up smearing red paint on their faces shouting, “Black Lives Matter!” His fans shouted them down as they were being removed yelling, “Trump!” At UCLA his event was delayed over an hour as students formed a human chain blocking entry. Attendees had to sneak in a back door. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee he mocked a transgender student who protested a locker room policy. On February 1, 2017 at UC Berkeley there were over 1,500 protesters, one arrest and about $100,000 in damage along with the event being canceled. Police were criticized for their “hands off” policy when more arrests weren’t made. President Donald Trump criticized the school for not “defending free speech” and threatened to defund the school. Yiannopoulos is an avid Trump supporter and calls him “Daddy!”
Milo recently got a book deal from Simon and Schuster that enraged many of their authors and saw feminist author Roxanne Gay withdraw her book from the publisher. He was invited to speak at CPAC despite his well known racist, anti Muslim, anti woman, and homophobic views. Matt Schlapp, Chairman of the ACU said, “Whether we like it or not he’s a big voice in this movement and we believe our members can handle it and make their own judgments on whether or not they think a speaker is saying what is accurate or inaccurate, or being hateful.” What schlapp didn’t say was that many of his organization agree wholeheartedly with many of Milo’s positions.
Days before Milo was scheduled to speak; old videos surfaced of Milo discussing sexual relationships between adults and children. Yiannopoulos himself said the videos were selectively edited but he “could have been more selective with his words” denying support for pedophilia. The ACU rescinded his invitation saying his comments “broke through important barriers.” Matt Schlapp appeared on “Morning Joe” the day before the opening of CPAC, defending his original invitation to Milo and explaining the disinvitation as well. The hypocrisy was amazing.
It was okay to invite a racist, fear-mongering, self-loathing homophobe under the veil of free speech. All of a sudden your sensitivities are aroused based on some years old videos as opposed to some days old comments and writings. For all your defense of free speech the tides turned when you realized that the Conservative Movement could be tainted by his appearance. Did you suddenly appreciate what the visual would be of hundreds of conservative leaders and followers. Cheering his vile spew and being seen as exactly what you claim your party is not. For some strange reason, racists don’t mind being racist but detest being called one. A televised newscast of your group rallying around his hatred could have come close to an Edmund Pettus Bridge moment. When the nation truly realizes just who and what you are.
Breitbart News apparently has no problem with Milo as he still remains in his position. Simon & Schuster apparently had enough and canceled his book deal. When CPAC canceled Milo’s appearance it allowed them to hang onto the tiny remaining piece of moral authority they claim they have. I’d rather he have spoken, removing all pretense whatsoever.

Updated to note that Milo Yiannopoulos in a totally self-serving statement, just resigned from Breitbart News!
